Your game is stuttering just as the match gets good. Your video call freezes halfway through a sentence. The speed test says 500 Mbps, yet everything that needs a quick response feels painfully slow. So, why is my broadband latency high when my download speed looks perfectly healthy?

Because speed and responsiveness are not the same thing. Broadband speed is how much data your connection can move. Latency, often called ping, is how long it takes a tiny piece of data to travel to a server and back. You can have blistering full fibre speeds and still get lag if something between your device and the server is causing delay.

The good news: high latency is usually diagnosable. The less good news: it is not always your broadband line. Let’s separate the actual culprit from the usual suspects.

What counts as high broadband latency?

Latency is measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better, particularly for gaming, voice calls, remote desktop work and live streaming.

For most UK households, a ping below 20 ms to a nearby UK server is excellent. Between 20 and 50 ms is generally fine for everyday use and most online games. At 50 to 100 ms, you may start noticing delays in competitive gaming or calls. Above 100 ms is where lag becomes hard to ignore.

That said, the server location matters. A ping of 15 ms to London and 110 ms to a server in North America can both be entirely normal. Physics is annoyingly difficult to negotiate with. No provider can make data cross an ocean instantly.

What matters most is consistency. A stable 30 ms connection often feels better than one jumping from 10 ms to 150 ms every few seconds. Those jumps are called jitter, and they are a major reason calls sound robotic and games feel erratic.

Why is my broadband latency high? Start with Wi-Fi

For many homes, the broadband connection is not the problem. Wi-Fi is.

Wi-Fi signals have to compete with walls, floors, neighbouring networks, smart devices, microwaves and the general chaos of a busy home. If you are gaming upstairs while the router sits behind the TV downstairs, your ping can rise sharply even when the fibre line entering your property is performing perfectly.

The quickest test is simple: connect a laptop or console directly to your router using an Ethernet cable, then run the same latency test again. If the ping improves dramatically, you have found the issue. It is your in-home wireless set-up, not necessarily the broadband service.

Move the router into an open, central position where possible. Keep it off the floor, away from large metal objects and not tucked into a cupboard because it looks tidier. If your home is larger, has thick walls or stretches over several floors, a mesh Wi-Fi system or wired access point can make more difference than upgrading to a faster package.

Use the right Wi-Fi band

Most modern routers offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further but is slower and more crowded. The 5 GHz band is usually quicker and better for latency at shorter distances.

If your device is close to the router, use 5 GHz. If it is far away, 2.4 GHz may be more reliable, though it may not deliver the lowest ping. Wi-Fi 6 and newer standards can also help when lots of devices are competing for airtime, but they cannot repeal the laws of distance and brickwork.

Your household may be filling the connection

A broadband connection can become sluggish when someone starts a large download, cloud backup, software update or 4K stream. This is particularly common when the upload connection is saturated.

Uploads matter more than many people realise. Video calls, security cameras, photo backups and file sharing all send data out from your home. On older or asymmetric connections, upload capacity can be limited. Once it is full, even tiny time-sensitive packets get stuck in a queue. Your ping shoots up. This is often referred to as bufferbloat.

Try a latency test while the network is quiet, then repeat it while someone streams, downloads or backs up files. If latency jumps only under load, the answer is clear: your connection is being congested inside the home.

A router with proper quality of service settings can prioritise gaming, calls or work devices over less urgent traffic. It is not magic, but it can stop a huge download from wrecking everyone else’s evening. Full fibre services with stronger upload speeds can also make a meaningful difference for households that work, game and stream at the same time.

The destination server can be the weak link

Not every laggy service means your broadband is laggy. If one game, website or work platform is slow while everything else behaves normally, the issue may be at the other end.

Game servers can be overloaded. A streaming platform can have a regional fault. Your employer’s virtual private network may route traffic through an office hundreds of miles away. Even a well-run server may be busy at peak times.

Test more than one destination. Compare a nearby speed test server, a couple of games or services, and a video call platform. If only one destination is affected, restarting your router ten times will not fix their infrastructure. It may be irritating, but at least it stops you chasing the wrong problem.

Check for peak-time congestion and network faults

Latency that rises at roughly the same time each evening can point to congestion. This could be within your household, on a local network segment or further along the route used to reach certain services.

Full fibre is designed to offer much stronger, more consistent performance than older copper-based broadband, but no network is immune to faults, maintenance or unusually heavy demand. The key is the pattern. Does the issue happen across wired and Wi-Fi devices? Does it affect every service? Does it persist at quiet times? Is it a sudden change from your normal performance?

If the answer is yes, collect useful evidence before contacting support. Run tests at different times of day, note the ping and jitter, and record whether you tested over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Support teams can do far more with a pattern than with “the internet is bad”. Fair warning: “bad” is not a diagnostic category.

A practical way to find the cause

Do not change five things at once. You will not know what fixed it. Work through the following checks in order:

  1. Restart the router once, then leave it alone for several minutes.
  2. Test latency on Wi-Fi and again with Ethernet directly into the router.
  3. Pause downloads, backups, cloud syncing and streaming on other devices.
  4. Test several nearby UK servers and the specific service where you notice lag.
  5. Repeat at a quiet time and during your usual busy period.
  6. Check whether every device is affected or only one phone, console or computer.

If Ethernet is fine but Wi-Fi is poor, improve coverage. If latency rises only when the house is busy, look at traffic management, upload capacity and which devices are hogging the line. If every wired device shows high ping to multiple destinations at all times, contact your provider with your test results.

When changing broadband could help

Switching package will not cure a weak Wi-Fi signal, a distant game server or an old laptop struggling in the background. But it can help where the underlying connection is the bottleneck.

Moving from copper broadband to full fibre can reduce variability, particularly for homes with several heavy users. A service with better upload performance is worth considering if video calls, gaming, CCTV, cloud backups and remote work all happen at once. For serious gamers and home workers, a provider’s network quality and support are often more useful than a headline download figure alone.

Ask clear questions before switching: what technology serves your address, what upload speed is available, whether the router supports modern Wi-Fi standards, and how faults are handled. Straight answers beat glossy promises every time.

Do not accept lag as normal

A momentary ping spike happens. Persistent high latency, dropped calls and games that become unplayable every evening are not something you should simply put up with.

Start with Ethernet, test under load, and look for a pattern. Once you know whether the issue is Wi-Fi, household demand, the destination server or the line itself, you can fix the right thing rather than throwing money at a bigger speed number.
